A student from City of Anaheim competes in the 2016 Solar Cup Competition.

High school students from the city of Anaheim will be competing against teams from Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside and San Diego counties in the 15th Annual Solar Cup Competition.  The competition is held May 19-21 at Lake Skinner, in Temecula Valley.

Teams from the city of Anaheim have an ongoing sponsorship by Anaheim Public Utilities. As part of the sponsorship, teams received funds for materials needed to build the boat from design to completion, and each boat is powered by solar energy stored in batteries.

The Solar Cup is a high school education program in which teams of students from throughout Southern California build and race solar-powered boats.  The seven-month program is hosted by The Metropolitan Water District of Southern California. Through the program, students learn about conservation of natural resources, electrical and mechanical engineering, problem solving and much more.​
