How Relationship-Based Mentorship Serves the Cultural Mindset of Marginalized Communities featuring Christian Esteban, Executive Director at JOYA Scholars

Our dream is to amplify our youth and on the margins. We want our kids to recognize who they are, and believe they have a future worth pursuing and stories worth telling.

The culturally beautiful neighborhoods we serve are often viewed as anything but, and as a result, our neighbors are often only defined as how they appear on the surface—of low-income, Latinx, and immigrant backgrounds residing in communities stricken by poverty, drugs, and gang-related violence.

In this challenging socio-political climate, many of us desire to run to those who are persecuted. In many cases, we may be outsiders to the vulnerable individuals we serve, and so we must learn how to empathize with their cultural realities to reach them and hope to be reached by them.
