The Muzeo Museum and Cultural Center engages the community in exploring and celebrating our diverse heritage, culture, and arts through creative programming.

Position Overview
Muzeo Museum and Cultural Center is seeking a dynamic, community-minded Museum Educator to lead and grow the institution’s educational programming and outreach efforts. This full-time position is the primary driver of Muzeo’s educational experience onsite, offsite, and digitally, and plays a pivotal role in deepening community engagement across Anaheim and the surrounding region.

The Museum Educator has two primary areas of focus: (a) the creation, implementation, and management of educational programs within the museum, digitally, and externally as outreach at schools, festivals, and community events; and (b) the oversight and management of Muzeo’s docent and volunteer program.

The ideal candidate is a hands-on, participative educator who leads with curiosity and creativity. They will develop thoughtful programming that elevates the guest experience, promotes equitable access to arts and culture, and builds authentic relationships with diverse communities. They will work collaboratively across all departments and with the broader Muzeo team.

Duties and Responsibilities
Educational Programming

  • Design, develop, and implement a robust schedule of educational programs for diverse audiences including school groups, families, adults, seniors, and community organizations.
  • Plan and coordinate events that support Muzeo’s educational initiatives in partnership with Curatorial, Operations, and broader staff team.
  • Regularly lead and teach curriculum-based educational and creative sessions for students and the public centered on current exhibitions.
  • Create and maintain exhibition tours that are engaging, thoughtful, and inclusive; develop informational packets for staff and docents with talking points and context.
  • Research and retain guest presenters, contracted artists, teachers, and scholars; manage contracts and payment requests for classes, lectures, and programs.
  • Develop programming and curriculum that aligns with and elevates current exhibitions, in collaboration with the Exhibition Team and Outreach Specialist.
  • Produce and co-produce content for print and online materials to promote programs, events, and projects.
  • Organize pop-up programming and outreach materials; maintain a stock of art and craft supplies.
  • Research and pursue grant opportunities for educational programs; develop programming based on funding priorities; maintain statistics and documentation for grant reporting.

Community Outreach

  • Represent Muzeo and cultivate relationships with teachers, Anaheim school districts, and community organizations and other education stakeholders.
  • Create and implement initiatives for outreach to local schools; provide resources to educators and promote school tours and group visits.
  • Manage logistics of class and group visits in coordination with school schedules and the museum’s calendar.
  • Work with the Outreach Specialist to market, book, and manage group tours and off-site outreach programs.
  • Represent Muzeo at festivals, fairs, and community events, serving as an enthusiastic ambassador for the institution.

Docent and Volunteer Management

  • Recruit, train, and manage a strong pool of docents and volunteers; maintain the volunteer database; actively communicate schedules, updates, and ongoing engagement opportunities.
  • Develop and maintain training resources for docents on exhibition subject matter, tour standards, and audience engagement.
  • Oversee docent scheduling for events and tours; track volunteer hours and records.

Institutional Collaboration

  • Collaborate across departments to provide support and advance institution-wide initiatives, including gallery installation, facility rentals, and special projects.
  • Oversee and manage staff when team members are assigned to work Education initiatives.
  • Communicate educational program needs, requirements, and timelines clearly to the full organization.
  • Assist in achieving annual budgeted goals through the creation of programs and events that attract sponsors, grants, donors, and ticket sales.
  • Work as a flexible, mission-oriented member of a small nonprofit team; willingness to wear multiple hats is essential.
  • Be available to staff private events, festivals, and other programs as needed; some evenings, weekends, and holidays required.
  • Remain current on best practices and emerging trends in museum education, community engagement, and socially engaged art practices.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications
The ideal candidate will bring the following knowledge, skills, and experience:

  • Demonstrated experience designing and delivering public educational programs, ideally in a museum, gallery, cultural center, or community arts setting.
  • Experience working with diverse audiences across all age groups, from young children to seniors, with an inclusive and welcoming approach.
  • Strong knowledge of pedagogy, curriculum design, and audience-centered teaching strategies.
  • Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills; comfort with public speaking and community representation.
  • Experience managing volunteers or docents, including scheduling, training, and relationship management.
  • Strong organizational and project management skills; ability to manage multiple deadlines and priorities with attention to detail.
  • Experience with grant research, writing, and reporting is a plus.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and Google Workspace applications
  • Experience in a mission-driven nonprofit or arts organization preferred.
  • Commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility in all programming and community engagement.
  • Flexibility to work some evenings, weekends, and occasional holidays based on museum event needs.

Education and Experience

A bachelor’s degree in Museum Education, Museum Studies, Education, Art History, or a closely related field is preferred, or equivalent professional experience. Significant hands-on teaching experience with artworks, artifacts, or related educational content is strongly valued. Instructional or engagement experience in a gallery or museum setting is preferred. An equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered.

Physical Requirements

This position involves a mix of desk work and active, on your feet facilitation. Frequent movement throughout the museum and campus is required. Occasional lifting of up to 25 lbs. is necessary. Some outdoor and off-site work at events and community outreach is expected. Repetitive computer use is also required.
